Hoping to convert my rhd car to pas, I am told by another owner that i need to get a lhd power steering rack from a sierra, does anyone have a rack or help with pointing me in the right direction in getting one, idealy something that has been reconditioned already if pos.
It sounds straight forward, but any further advice would be good with regards to the conversion, shortening rack?, pump, brackets etc etc.
Thanks
Claudio

If you use the adjustable power steering from an old Corsa, like the Escort rally boys used to, you can retain the original rack as the modified bit is the column assembly with its ecu assey attached.
If you were to use the hydro-electrical power steering like an MR2 everything including the original rack would need changing.
Hope this helps

At the risk of sounding thick can you just tell me more about the corsa bit, sounds interesting but i am a bit confused by it, whats replaced and where do the pump pipes go etc
What i realy wanted to achieve is a conversion like some the original cars had, if possible
Cheers

No probs at all,
The power steering unit is in a case attached to the column which houses a motor and gears. Separate to the box is a variable rotory dial to adjust the steering rate. Everthing is 12 volt DC. There are no hydraulic pipes like a std hyraulic system.
I spoke to someone recently who had one fitted on a genuine RS200. I think it may have been Jim A, and I think it may have been at the Boreham gathering last year.
There were other cars that had a factory PAS column systems available, Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 post 1991 or 92.
If you check out eBay under Ford Escort steering you will find a few as they come up quite alot.
If you wanted to upgrade to works or rally RS 200 PAS, I would have thought the system would have been based on a modified Sierra /Granada system with an electric pump motor & resovoir due to the long pipe run to the engine. I saw Hoppy's racks when they were up for sale and they just looked like extended Sierra items.

Thats realy interesting, never new anything about the corsa electric conversion, learn something new everyday , there are a number on ebay some are B type, others C etc, which one would i need and is any machining required to get it in place etc.
Would you happen to know of anyone that may have the converted sierra steering rack if i choose that route.

I dont know which is more suitable under the 200 dash without taking measurements, I think it would be more important to make sure its a matching assembly and taken from one doner car. Generally newer versions are better than old.
Personally I would go for one with rake and reach adjustment like my own replica.

I think everyone needs to be a bit careful here, I have spent many hours researching the corsa conversion for the RS200.
I have had the following feedback.... but as I have not fitted one it maybe worth your while asking these questions before you do.
1: The unit is too big to fit under the RS200 dash.
2: Corsa "B" is a stronger unit as it is not the adjustable type and also the more expensive to buy secondhand.
3: The column is actually geared and requires a quick rack just to realise standard road car ratio's.
4: There is most definitely machining and welding to do on the column shafts and mountings. If this is not done to a very high standard you can imagine the consequences at over 100mph in the forest!

The Corsa power steering is interesting and seems to be the easiest way of going down the pas avenue if its possible, however, totally agree that there should be no doubt in making sure that it is suitable for the job and machined/adjusted/welded properly by a professional before fitting up, aparently the bonus of this system is that should the motor fail the steering will revert back to normal unassisted steering and also the motor can be placed at any angle to suit space under dash before fitting any brackets to it.
Some of these kits available are supplied with an adjuster so that the required amount of power assistance can be set at the required level, with this in place would you still need to fit a different rack
Heres a link to one on ebay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330677777533? ... 1423.l2649
Would be interesting to see if any owners come forward to say whether they have the system fitted or indeed have had some other conversion carried out, come on dont be shy and post something here if you have any further advice, would save me an awful lot of digging around for further info.
Can anyone clarify how Ford did the conversions for RHD cars, been told by another owner that i need a sierra pas LHD rack, (not sure whether standard sierra or the 2wd/4wd sierra cosworth rack) which then needs shortening and as Mike2 mentioned i suppose i could fit an electric pump up front.

Hi,
I have spent some considerable time trying to fit the Corsa B system to the 200, I have concluded there is just too much to cut away to make it worthwhile.
The power rack used on the works cars was initially a cut down Sierra/Granada rack, fitted upside down. The works cars also used a larger diameter column/spline arrangement. The pump was a ZF unit flowing 4 l/min with -8 pipework. The connection to the rack was painful!
Later adaptions to this use the electric pumps found on vauxhall, citroen etc, but they can be a bit 'laggy' in operation and do draw high current in operation.
The works did have a batch of racks made by TRW, the chances of finding one are extremely remote, they cost them a fortune!
Cheers

Well at least i now know the corsa thing is out of the question
So to recap, i need to find somehow a lhd sierra/granada power rack and get it shortened, i then need to decide whether to somehow fix a belt driven pump off the alternater belt and get the pipes to the rack or get an electric pump .
I still prefer the idea of a belt driven pump , however, what are the problems, is it that the pipe runs are too long and there is pressure loss or just simply the idea of trying to get them to the rack from the rear.
Would like to hear from anyone that may have a suitable rack, you can pm me.
Thanks for all the advice so far, and keep it coming especially if someone has actually carried out such a conversion or has any new ideas they can add etc
